Group DBT Therapy
Practical skills for managing emotions, relationships, and life's harder moments.
About this service
Skills for the harder moments
At Oakdene House Foundation, our Group Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) program supports people who feel emotionally overwhelmed, stuck in unhealthy patterns, or constantly pulled between wanting things to change and struggling to know how.
DBT is a practical, evidence-based therapy that helps people build skills to better manage emotions, relationships, stress, impulsive behaviours, and difficult thoughts. It was originally developed to support people experiencing intense emotional distress, but is now widely used across mental health, addiction recovery, trauma support, and wellbeing programs.
Our group program focuses on learning real-world tools in a safe, supportive environment alongside others who are working through similar challenges.

What the Group Covers
Four core skill areas
The DBT group focuses on four practical skill areas — each one builds on the others.
Mindfulness
Learning how to slow down, stay present, and become more aware of thoughts, emotions, and reactions without immediately acting on them.
Distress Tolerance
Building practical ways to get through difficult moments without making things worse through impulsive behaviours, substance use, gambling, anger, or withdrawal.
Emotion Regulation
Understanding emotions more clearly and learning strategies to reduce emotional overwhelm and increase stability.
Interpersonal Effectiveness
Developing healthier communication, boundaries, conflict management, and relationship skills.

What to Expect
Structured, supportive, and practical
Our DBT groups are structured, supportive, and practical. Sessions combine discussion, skill-building, reflection, and guided exercises that can be applied in everyday life.
The focus is not on judgement or forcing people to share more than they are comfortable with. Many people find relief simply being in a room where others understand what it feels like to struggle.
Groups are facilitated by experienced mental health professionals who work from a compassionate, respectful, and person-centred approach.
